New A elects Zohran Mamdani mayor; the Public Square sets an emerald record
The four boroughs voted the way they always vote, only more so. The new mayor takes office January 1.
Zohran Mamdani will be the next Mayor of New A City. The result came in shortly after the polls closed across the four boroughs, and the Public Square — which has no official role in elections and behaves as if it has all of them — set a record for emeralds given in a single hour.
Mamdani ran on the platform his real-world counterpart ran on, translated into blocks: a freeze on rents for stabilized villager homes, a fare-free Tiger Bus, city-owned grocery stores, and a Department of Community Safety that villagers immediately renamed the Golem Corps. He carried Man A and New BK comfortably, split New S, and lost Long Island, which voted for the bridge.
The NASE took the news calmly and then less calmly. New A Real Estate and Silvernine Properties, the two largest private landlords, slipped on the rent-freeze pledge. Juniors, whose line the Tiger Bus feeds, gained.
Governor Hochul congratulated the mayor-elect and noted, in the way governors do, that the Metro remains a state agency. The President's account posted three times about the skyline and once about the result.
The mayor-elect's first post on the Square, from a villager account with a beard and a Metro card, read: 'Thank you, New A. I am going to ride every line before January. Yes, including the one under New S.'
New A is a virtual city. Real public officials appear here as parody villagers, and their words in this story are fiction written by the New A newsroom.

The story’s move on each stock. The NASE prices it in fast — about 74% of it within the hour of publication. 40% of the shock is permanent; the other 60% fades with a 10-day half-life, so 70% of the move is still in the price 10 days later. Right: the price now and today’s change.
