Hochul and Blakeman agree to one debate: October 20, live from PIX 11 Long Island, simulcast on New A 1
After a month of letters, the campaigns settled on a single hour at 8 Flatbush Avenue — two weeks before Election Day, on the challenger’s home turf and the Governor’s terms.
Governor Kathy Hochul and Long Island Executive Bruce Blakeman will meet for one televised debate on Tuesday, October 20, at 7:00 PM, the campaigns confirmed Monday evening. The hour-long debate will be staged at PIX 11 Long Island’s studio at 8 Flatbush Avenue and carried live on New A 1 across the five boroughs.
The agreement ends a month of public letters. Blakeman’s campaign proposed five debates, one in each borough. Hochul’s proposed one, “wherever the Executive likes.” He chose Long Island; she chose the format — no studio audience, no opening statements and a full segment on the Metro.
Borough by borough, the stakes are plain. The Governor leads comfortably in Man A and The BX and by double digits in New BK, where the south side is closer; the Executive leads on Long Island and in New S. New A 1’s September poll had Hochul ahead by eleven statewide, and the three public polls since have ranged from six points (FOX News) to twelve (CNN). The undecided voters are concentrated in southern New BK and on the island — the audience closest to the studio.
“I’ll debate him anywhere, and now I know where,” the Governor said. “Long Island has been waiting for this,” Blakeman said. “So have I.”
CNN and FOX News will carry the debate on their national feeds. New A 1’s borough desks will host reaction from all five boroughs until midnight, and the NASE’s media stocks, which tend to enjoy debate nights, ticked up on the news.
