New A and North C sign a compact to bring back the early rail lines
The redstone line that first reached North C in 2014 was cut back when the Metro took over. Governors Hochul and Ashby agreed to rebuild it — as a modern line, on the old alignment.
The State of New A and North C today signed a rail compact to restore passenger service on the alignment of the early redstone lines, which first reached North C during the Silent Growth years and were cut back after 2018 as the underground Metro became the city’s spine.
Under the compact, New A will design and build the line from Man A to the state line and North C will build the rest, with the two sharing the cost of the stations. A joint survey team will walk the old right-of-way this autumn; the Land Registry’s 2014 archive map shows where it ran.
“Upstate rail was on my list before I was Governor, and it will be done before I’m finished,” Governor Kathy Hochul said. North C Governor Lorraine Ashby, whose first term has been spent on hurricane recovery and the research corridor, called the compact “the first piece of infrastructure in North C in two years that isn’t a repair.”
North C’s economy has grown steadily since the Chicago addition, and employers in the research corridor have asked for a rail link to Man A for three years. Verizon, whose Cocoa Street building carries the Metro’s signal redstone, will supply the new line’s signalling.
No completion date was set. The survey team’s first report is due in the spring.
