Final Push Before 9 PM: New A's Turnout Surge Meets the Last-Hour Rush
With polls open until 9 PM and New A's board showing no votes counted yet, Hochul and Blakeman race to turn a record early vote into a win.
The clock is the story now. At 7:45 PM, polls across the State of New A have a little more than an hour left, and New A's big board shows no votes counted yet in the race between Governor Kathy Hochul and Long Island Executive Bruce Blakeman. Every ward, from Flatbush to Soundview, reads zero until the doors close at 9.
What the board can't show yet is already striking. Unofficial Board of Elections figures put New A's early vote at 690,526 villagers over nine days, up 257,892, or 59.6%, from 432,634 in 2022. For the Washington desk, that is the headline before the headline: an electorate that showed up early and in force for a race national Democrats see as a test of whether a blue state stays blue under a Trump White House.
Outside Triangle Junction in Flatbush, the evening commute turned into a last stop at the polls. "I ride the Metro every day, and the toll money is why my train actually comes," said one Flatbush voter, emeralds still in hand from a corner stall. "I wasn't going to let anyone take that back." Downtown New BK and Man A, where most of New A's voters live, have been steady all day.
On Long Island, Blakeman's home turf, the mood is defiant. "Ask anyone who drives into Man A what that congestion toll costs them," a Soundview resident said. In car-centric Mill Bergen, drivers have spent the day voting against the toll, though few people live there.
Hochul's villager self, campaigning with running mate Adrienne Adams on the first all-woman major-party ticket, urged anyone still in line to stay there. Blakeman and running mate Todd Hood made their closing pitch to independents and the towns off the city map. The final polls had Hochul ahead by 11 to 14 points, but polls aren't votes.
Once the count starts, remember the order matters: early reporters like Mill Bergen could tilt the first numbers before the big blue wards come in. Until 9 PM, the only number that counts is the line.

The story’s move on each stock. The NASE prices it in fast — about 74% of it within the hour of publication. 40% of the shock is permanent; the other 60% fades with a 10-day half-life, so 70% of the move is still in the price 10 days later. Right: the price now and today’s change.
