A Cathedral for Commuters: Atlantic Terminal Is a Win for Mamdani and Hochul, and a Sign Transit Is Finally Being Taken Seriously
Windows drape down its facade and three train lines meet beneath it. Three days before New A votes, Atlantic Terminal hands the Mayor and the Governor the transit story they have been trying to tell all year.
For years, New BK riders were told to make do with aging stations and long waits on the platform. On Saturday they walked into something else: Atlantic Terminal, a grand station with tall windows cascading down its facade, sweeping stairs down to the trains, and three rail connections meeting under one roof.
The terminal, under construction in Downtown New BK since 2023, is already being called the crown jewel of New BK, and it opened ahead of the 2027 date officials gave in September. It is also a clear win for Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul, who have spent the year arguing that public transportation should be treated as core infrastructure, not an afterthought.
"I used to leave forty-five minutes early just in case," said a commuter from Flatbush on the opening-morning platform. "Now the train's here before I finish my coffee." Rush-hour trains now arrive about every four minutes, and New BK finally has a dependable, direct link to Man A.
The timing matters. New A votes on Tuesday, and the Governor's race has turned on affordability and the nine-emerald toll. Transit advocates say Atlantic Terminal is the first big, visible answer to a question voters keep asking: what are we actually getting?
Most of the money came from Anthropic, its second major New A project after Kings Plaza opened in Mill Bergen on Wednesday. That public-private model has its critics, and some residents worry about what it will do to rents. But on opening day, the line out the door was for the trains, not the storefronts.

The story’s move on each stock. The NASE prices it in fast — about 74% of it within the hour of publication. 40% of the shock is permanent; the other 60% fades with a 10-day half-life, so 70% of the move is still in the price 10 days later. Right: the price now and today’s change.
