Democrats Take the House: Washington's New Gavel Lands on New A's Big Board
With Democrats projected to control the Union's House 124–75 as of 9 p.m., New A's banks, drillers and defense shops brace for oversight while transit money looks safer.
The Washington desk's biggest number of the night arrived from out in the Union: Decision Desk HQ projects Democrats will control the U.S. House, holding 124 seats to the GOP's 75 as of 9 p.m., and NBC News agrees. For New A, a city that runs on emeralds and federal dollars in equal measure, the gavel changing hands matters almost as much as the governor's race called here two hours ago.
On the NASE floor in Times Square, traders read the projection as a warning to anyone who answers to congressional committees. J.P. Morgan Chase fell 0.8% and Bank of America 0.6% on expectations of tougher bank oversight. OP Gas slid 0.8% as energy subsidies came into doubt, and Cray Industries dropped 0.6% with defense budgets headed for review. Juniors rose 0.6% on hopes for federal transit money, and Verizon edged up 0.4% on infrastructure bets.
"Hearings are coming, and the big banks know it," said a clerk outside Chase at 3 Times Square, who rides the Metro in from Downtown New BK. "For once the people asking questions in Washington might be on the side of riders, not drillers."
The House result stacks onto a strong Democratic night watched from Man A: Roy Cooper flipped North Carolina's Senate seat, and Sen. Jon Ossoff held Georgia. At home, Kathy Hochul was called the winner at 9:00 PM, and with 40% reported statewide she leads Bruce Blakeman 70.3% to 29.7%.
That pairing is what New A's transit lobby wanted: a governor keeping the congestion toll and a House less likely to squeeze the federal money behind the Metro. A Democratic House offers no veto over President Trump, whose approval sits at 43%, but it gives New A's delegation subpoena power and a seat at the budget table.
Most of the city's own count is still to come. Man A, New BK, Long Island and New S have yet to post a single ballot on New A's board, with only The BX at 90% reported. Washington, for now, moved faster.
