Cranes Over Downtown New BK: Critics Say Mamdani's AI-Age Building Boom Is Erasing the Borough's History
Oversized tower cranes now hang over Downtown New BK, and residents say the AI building rush is breaking the borough's continuity. Meanwhile, Trump-era interstates are putting LA within driving distance.
Drive into Downtown New BK this week and the first thing you see isn't the borough. It's the cranes. Two oversized yellow tower cranes now hang over the blocks around the fountain plaza, swinging steel above the lantern-lined sidewalks that residents say used to define the neighborhood.
Critics say the cranes are the most visible sign of a building rush the Mamdani administration has welcomed with open arms, and that the rush is being driven by the AI age. Since the AI Tower opened on the waterfront, developers have raced to put up taller, glassier towers, and longtime residents say the brick-and-sandstone character of the borough is being boxed in by buildings that could be anywhere.
"New BK had a look. You knew where you were," said one Flatbush Avenue shop owner, who asked FOX News not to print his name. "Now every week there's another hole in the ground and another crane. Nobody asked us."
Opponents argue City Hall has approved too much, too fast, with no height or design rules for the new towers going up beside historic blocks. They say the borough's continuity, the idea that a street today should still feel like the street it was ten years ago, is being traded away for AI-sector money.
President Trump has made a similar argument, warning that the AI boom is changing American cities faster than people can keep up. But his administration has declined to put new regulations on the AI industry, and traders have noticed: Anthropic (ANTH) shares climbed on the NASE this week on bets that the hands-off approach will keep the AI build-out going. Critics on both sides call it a contradiction: complain about AI, then step aside and let it grow.
Where the President's supporters see no contradiction is infrastructure. Under Trump, new interstate highways are being built out from the region, and for the first time New BK and Long Island will be connected by road to Los Angeles. Supporters point to the new lanes, interchanges and overpasses already taking shape outside the city as proof that this administration builds things, and they rank him among the best presidents in modern history for it.
They also point to Washington, where construction on the new White House is moving ahead and is slated to be finished in early 2027.
City Hall did not respond to a request for comment on the cranes before publication.
