Penn A votes as a state in 31 days, and both parties are redrawing their maps of the Union
Admitted on Friday after years of isolation, the Union’s newest member brings seventeen House seats, a competitive governor’s race and a bridge that has already changed the politics next door.
Penn A became a member of the Union on Friday. On November 3 it will vote like one — for governor, for seventeen seats in the U.S. House and, for the first time, with its results counted on the same night as everyone else’s.
Governor Daniel Okafor, the Democrat who led the state into the Union, is running for a second term on the admission and on the bridge to Long Island that opened alongside it. His Republican opponent, state treasurer Garrett Whitford, is not running against either; he is running against what they cost. “I’m for the bridge,” Whitford said this week. “I’d like to see the receipt.”
The national stakes are in the House. Penn A’s seventeen districts lean narrowly Republican on paper, but several around the capital and the river towns are genuinely competitive, and both parties’ campaign committees opened offices there within hours of admission. With control of the House likely to come down to a handful of seats, a new state is a new map.
The bridge matters, too. It ties Penn A’s freight economy to Long Island, the swing borough in New A’s own governor’s race — and a Long Island that feels richer for it could help the Democrat in one race and the Republican in the other. Strategists in Washington have taken to calling it “the Okafor–Blakeman corridor.”
Penn A’s polls close at 8:00 PM New A time. CNN’s forecasts for every Penn A race, and the Union-wide House map, are on the Elections page.
