Villagers swear the old mayor kept a gold vault under City Hall. The Registry went to look.
A rumor born at the Well says congestion-pricing emeralds were stacked in gold blocks beneath the mayor's office. The Land Registry inspected the basement.
It started, as most things in New A do, at the Well. A fletcher from Two Bridges said his cousin had seen it: a room of gold blocks under the mayor's office at City Hall, where the toll emeralds went after dark. By the weekend the rumor had a name — 'the Adams vault' — and by Monday it had a thread with four hundred emeralds on it.
The Land Registry, which keeps the deed for City Hall (MA-0014, three floors, 23 blocks, city-owned), sent two clerks with a lantern. The basement holds the deed archive, two chests of surveying tools and the original 2013 zoning map. No gold. A single gold ingot was found in a Cartographer's coat pocket and returned to him.
Outside New A, former Mayor Eric Adams — whose term in the real New York ended as the Congestion Relief Zone began — was indicted on federal bribery and wire-fraud charges in September 2024; the case was dismissed in 2025. Inside New A, the only thing in the vault was paperwork, and the toll emeralds go where the Metro authority says they go: signals, tunnel lights and the Atlantic Terminal dig.
City Hall published the basement inventory anyway. 'People will believe what they want about a vault,' the Registry clerk said. 'They will not believe a spreadsheet, but we made one.'
The thread at the Well now has six hundred emeralds. The most popular reply is a drawing of the Cartographer's ingot.
New A is a virtual city. Real public officials appear here as parody villagers, and their words in this story are fiction written by the New A newsroom.
