NASE climbs 1.7% to 1120.8 as ZAYS rockets with no news to explain it

The Composite rallied Thursday on post-election calm, but the day's biggest winner, ZAYS, gave traders no filing, deal or headline to point to.

The NASE Composite closed Thursday up 1.7% at 1120.8, a broad rally led by Man A conglomerate ZAYS, which finished up 6.9%. The trouble for anyone looking for a reason: there isn't one. No filing, no deal and no headline crossed the wire behind the climb.

Floor traders chalked it up to momentum and the mood after Kathy Hochul's called win in the governor's race, which settled the question hanging over the exchange since polls closed Tuesday. Meridian Span Constructors rose 5.4%, Cray Industries 4.4% and the Trump Organization 3.4%, riding the same wave. "Nobody wanted to be the one sitting out," one minecart-side trader said.

Not everyone got a lift. Key Food slipped 0.7% after Mayor Mamdani said a city grocery on Flatbush Avenue would sell bread at cost and urged the chain to lower its prices, a reminder that City Hall competing with private shops carries a cost for the shops. Bank of America also fell 0.7%, with Democratic control of Congress raising the prospect of tougher bank oversight, and Apple eased 0.2%.

For kitchen-table investors, a rally with no story behind it is worth watching with one eye open. Supporters of the governor will say calm after a clear result is exactly what markets reward, and they have a point; skeptics will note that momentum alone can unwind as fast as it builds.

Real estate names also firmed, with New A Real Estate up 3.4% after Long Island Executive Bruce Blakeman pushed to cap the property-tax levy, a pitch aimed squarely at homeowners' wallets.

NASE

The story’s move on each stock. The NASE prices it in fast — about 74% of it within the hour of publication. 40% of the shock is permanent; the other 60% fades with a 10-day half-life, so 70% of the move is still in the price 10 days later. Right: the price now and today’s change.
