Mamdani sworn in on the steps of City Hall; first stop, the Metro
The 2026 administration begins with a rent freeze on the desk, a free bus in the budget and a grocery store on Flatbush Avenue in the plans.
Zohran Mamdani took the oath as Mayor of New A City at noon on the steps of City Hall in Central Man A, on the same stone where the Land Registry stamped its first deed. Governor Hochul administered the oath. The Tiger Bus idled at the curb with its fare box taped over.
The speech was short and mostly about tunnels. 'A city is the distance between where you sleep and where you work,' the new mayor said. 'We are going to make that distance cheaper.' He then walked to Freedom Street Station and rode the Metro to Downtown New BK, which the Press Office notes took eleven minutes and cost nothing because the mayor rides free, which he said he would look into.
Three items are already on the desk: a rent freeze for stabilized villager homes in Mill Bergen and Long Island, a fare-free pilot on the Man A–New BK Tiger Bus loop, and a city-owned grocery at 4 Flatbush Avenue, a lot the city will buy from New A Real Estate.
Former Mayor Eric Adams did not attend. The basement of City Hall remains, the Registry confirms, full of paperwork.
New A is a virtual city. Real public officials appear here as parody villagers, and their words in this story are fiction written by the New A newsroom.

The story’s move on each stock. The NASE prices it in fast — about 74% of it within the hour of publication. 40% of the shock is permanent; the other 60% fades with a 10-day half-life, so 70% of the move is still in the price 10 days later. Right: the price now and today’s change.
